上世紀六十年代成長的朋友一定會接觸過英式的搖滾（British Rock)，當時英國的年青人受到來自美國的搖滾影響，被Elvis Presley、Little Richard、Buddy Holly 等美國搖滾先驅啟發，發展出帶有不列顛文化色彩的搖滾曲風。
五十年代後期，英國出現了三百多個搖滾組合，分別有來自利勿浦的 The Beatles、Gerry & The Pacemakers 與The Searchers；伯明翰的 The Spencer Davis Group 與The Moody Blues；紐卡素的The Animals；倫敦的Rolling Stones、The Kinks、The Yardbirds ，托定咸的Dave Clark Five；曼徹斯特的Freddie and the Dreamers、Herman's Hermits、The Hollies 與 Dave Clark Five。他們在英國帶動一個British Beat 的音樂運動，他們大多數是小組合，主要的樂器有主奏吉他、節奏吉他、低音結他、鍵琴及鼓，大部份的成員都能彈擅唱，歌曲大多數由隊員們集體創作的。
由於有不少的樂隊是來自利勿浦及鄰近地區，所以亦會以當地的Mersey 河命名為"Mersey Beat"。
在這些樂隊之中以The Beatles 的創作力最高，他們並沒有受到美國的騷靈（soul）及怨曲（blues）影響，走出自已的音樂風格，最終成為歷來最偉大的搖滾樂隊。
1964年他們成功登陸美國，CBS新聞主播Walter Cronkite 在二月七日晚間新聞以「披頭狂熱」（Beatlemania）專題報導他們在美國受歡迎的程度，並形容這是英國音樂的入侵（British Invasion)。之後他們出現在The Ed Sullivan 電視節目，吸引到百分之七十五的收看率。隨後的兩年間，英國Beat Bands 陸續的進軍美國，此起彼落的登上全美的搖滾排行榜。
